How do you turn transmog off in WoW Forever?

Blizzard's September 19 transmog video shows two ways. The first is talking to an NPC and choosing to disable transmogrification. The confirmation window tells you exactly what it does: other players' transmogged looks disappear for you, and you see only the equipment they have on.

The transmog disable confirmation: text saying you will no longer see appearances applied to other players' gear, only the equipment they actually have equipped, and that you can re-enable it any time by speaking with the NPC again, with Accept and Cancel buttons

The second is the mode selector on your first login. It has two presets, and the one you pick sets a handful of options at once:

First-login presets
SettingClassicEnhanced
Character models Standard Definition High Definition
Quest points of interest and objective blobs Off On
One-bag Off On
Transmog Off On

Blizzard says any of these can be reconfigured later, so Classic isn't a lock-in. Pick Classic and other players' transmog is hidden from the moment you enter the world.

Short answer

Yes, WoW Forever has transmog, and it's optional. Turn it off by talking to an NPC or by picking the Classic preset on your first login; you can switch it back on later, and appearances keep getting collected.

Can you turn transmog back on?

Yes. The NPC's confirmation says you can re-enable it any time by speaking with them again, and the first-login presets can be changed later too. Appearances keep getting collected while it's off, so you won't have to re-farm anything.

Which one should you pick?

Transmog on or off
If you wantPick
The old-school feel, where a player's look tells you their gear Classic preset, or disable it at the NPC
To pick your own look, with HD models Enhanced preset
No transmog for now, but keep your options open Either: appearances are still collected and you can switch later

What Blizzard said in the live Q&A

  • The first-login choice is Classic or Enhanced. Classic switches off quest tracking and transmog automatically, and HD or SD models can also be changed at character creation and in the Graphics settings. 1:07:59
  • Transmog keeps the armor-type rule, but you can save a separate look for each armor type in the same slot, and the game switches to the matching one based on what you're wearing. 1:27:35

Dungeon and raid loot: who gets the appearance?

Dungeons are generous. When a BoP green or blue drops, every eligible looter gets the appearance, not just whoever wins the roll.

Raids are stricter. Epic appearances only go to the player who ends up owning the item.

Raid Epic Only the item's owner

Level restrictions and rulesets

Level restrictions on appearances lift at 60, so once you're capped, lower-level looks are open to you.

Yes, except for Hardcore. Blizzard says collections are account-wide on every ruleset but Hardcore, so what you collect on a Normal character also counts on your PvP or Roleplaying alts. Hardcore is sealed off: progress can flow out of it, but nothing flows in.

FAQ

Does my retail transmog collection carry over?
Official sources don't mention bringing a modern WoW collection into Forever. The one confirmed link is that some upgrade items work in both modern WoW and Forever.
Do you need to be level 60 to use transmog?
What unlocks at 60 is the removal of level restrictions on appearances. Blizzard hasn't spelled out what level transmog itself becomes available at.
