So what exactly is WoW Forever?
Blizzard pitches Forever as the third way to play WoW, next to modern and Classic. You go back to the original continents and level to 60, but the world, quests, classes and systems have all been reworked. The Deep Dive recap calls it a full new World of Warcraft game.
It isn't a seasonal realm like Season of Discovery, and it isn't a mode bolted onto Classic. Blizzard says it grew out of lessons from running Classic and SoD. You don't buy it separately either: an active subscription or Game Time covers it.
Where does Forever fit in the Warcraft timeline?
The story picks up after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. Blizzard describes it as Azeroth's early Year 1, before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal.
Forever also gets its own time bubble, so Blizzard can add new stories without breaking established lore. The fallout from Archimonde's defeat on Mount Hyjal is the clearest example.
The four design pillars
- Approachable and familiar
- The world is the main character
- Getting there matters more than the destination
- Protecting social play
Here's what that means in game: no flying mounts and no level scaling. Combat keeps Classic pacing, with an ordinary mob taking roughly 10–15 seconds to kill solo. Crowd control and threat still matter.
