Does WoW Forever have realms?
Not in the usual sense. Blizzard calls Forever “realmless”: no server list, no checking realm pop before you roll. You just pick the ruleset you want to play on.
That doesn’t mean one mega-realm. Each ruleset is its own large ecosystem. You can’t group with players on a different ruleset, and Horde and Alliance still can’t group with each other.
Forever rulesets at a glance
| Ruleset | How it works | Available |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | World PvP only when both players opt in | Launch |
| PvP | Open-world faction conflict, with faction-balance systems similar to Season of Discovery | Launch |
| Roleplaying | For RP players; the selection screen mentions strict naming and behavior rules | Launch |
| Hardcore | Fully enclosed, separate ruleset | After launch (winter on the roadmap) |

How does the Hardcore ruleset work?
Hardcore won’t be there on day one. Blizzard says it arrives after launch, and the roadmap lists “Forever Hardcore Launch” under winter. There’s no exact date.
It’s fully walled off. Collections and Legacy Points are shared account-wide across the other rulesets, but Hardcore sits outside that. Progress only flows one way: out of Hardcore, never in.
Dying doesn’t mean deleting, either. A dead Hardcore character can transfer to another ruleset, PvP included.
Which ruleset should you pick?
- Normal: you want to quest and level without getting ganked, and PvP only when you feel like it.
- PvP: you like running into the other faction out in the world. Getting jumped while questing is part of the deal.
- Roleplaying: you’re joining an RP guild or community. Pick a name that fits the setting.
- Hardcore: you want one-life leveling. Play somewhere else at launch and roll fresh once Hardcore opens in winter.
The rule that matters most: pick the same ruleset and faction as your friends and guild. With no cross-ruleset grouping, splitting up means you can’t even run a dungeon together.
