How do weapons and consumables work in Druid forms?
The September 30 deep dive makes your equipped weapon’s DPS relevant to form auto-attacks; attack speed still changes with form. A weapon is therefore more than a collection of secondary stats. Weapon enchants, procs, weightstones and Windfury Totem can work while shifted.
Most potions, doors and object interactions no longer force you out of form, and racial abilities remain available. Engineering bombs are an exception: only specified new SAF-T and EZ-Thro recipes work while shifted. October 8 fixed the bug preventing Mana Potions in Bear, Dire Bear and Cat Form.

Druid forms use weapon DPS and benefit from more item effects. Feral splits Cat’s Shifting Power from Bear’s Primal Bite, while Restoration gains Wild Growth. The October 8 beta build also revises Rage generation and Bear threat.
Where do Cat and Bear talent choices split?
| Decision | Cat direction | Bear direction |
|---|---|---|
| Resource use | Shifting Power trades mana for Energy. | Rage changes affect incoming damage and critical hits. |
| 16-point choice | Shifting Power after Shredding Attacks | Primal Bite after Savage Fury |
| Berserk | Raises critical chance for Combo abilities. | Removes Primal Bite’s cooldown and lets it hit multiple enemies. |
| Equipment interaction | Weapon DPS and effects that work in form | Defense skill contributes armor through Thick Hide. |
Shifting Power entered beta on October 1, overriding the older deep dive’s description of a future build. In Cat Form it turns 55% base mana into 40 Energy, with a 16-second cooldown that Improved Shifting Power can reduce. Effects that discount shapeshifting also lower its mana cost.
October 8 prevents using Shifting Power at full Energy. Wolfshead Helm now adds five Energy when that spell is used. Furor does not preserve a bank of Cat Energy through Bear Form, so an old bear-weaving resource loop is not a direct match for these talents.
What changed for Bear tanks in the October 8 build?
Bear and Dire Bear have a 50% threat bonus. Incoming-damage Rage calculations were fixed for Stamina, critical and crushing blows, and absorption effects. Blizzard also replaced the old fixed armor assumption with a level-dependent value in the 20–40% range. A damage shield should not reduce the Rage awarded for the attack.
Extra Rage from critical strikes rises from 75% to 100%. Demoralizing Roar generates threat again, and Thick Hide was moved into a code implementation to fix equipment changes while shifted. Lacerate arrives at level 42; a full class toolkit should not be confused with everything accessible under a particular beta level cap.
How do Balance and Restoration differ from Classic?
Balance’s Eclipse connects Wrath casts to faster Starfires. Overgrowth supports Entangling Roots on three targets at once, and Roots can be used indoors. Moonkin and Leader of the Pack do not stack: both critical-strike bonuses now cover spells and attacks.
Restoration receives Swiftmend at the 16-point milestone without consuming Rejuvenation or Regrowth. Wild Growth applies its HoT to the chosen player’s party, including pets, rather than selecting arbitrary raid members. Picking the initial target therefore determines which subgroup benefits.
Revive provides an out-of-combat resurrection at level 12. Gift of the Earthmother lowers the global cooldown for Rejuvenation, Swiftmend and Wild Growth. October 8 renames Predatory Instincts to Natural Instinct and adds spell healing based on Intellect.
Which older Druid details need updating?
Thorns returns to Vanilla base damage with a 6% spell-power ratio. Cat Form no longer incorrectly reduces maximum health. Cosmetic transformations layered over forms are more limited so opponents can recognize the form in combat; effects with an extra function, such as underwater breathing, can remain exceptions. That appearance rule is separate from permission to use a potion while shifted.
The practical equipment check is to separate three questions: does a proc work in form, does the item improve the form’s attacks, and does its visual transformation survive? The beta notes answer these through different systems; one positive answer should not be treated as proof of the others.
