What does World server is down mean?
If "World server is down" appears when you pick a character, the game can't reach the world server that character is on. What matters is how many characters get it: Blizzard's World Server is Down article handles the two cases differently.

If World server is down shows on every character, the problem is the server; wait for the realm. If only one character gets it, Blizzard's fix is to move that character with the self-service tool, then reset your UI. There's maintenance before launch on November 4.
If it happens on every character
The problem is on the server side. Blizzard asks you to check the Realm Status page and its support account; for Europe that's @BlizzardCSEU_EN on X. There's no setting you can change; login comes back once the server is up.
Watch the launch day: Blizzard's weekly maintenance schedule (Americas tab) lists WoW Forever as unavailable on November 4, 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. PST. The game opens at 3:00 p.m. PST, so not getting in during that window isn't an error, it's maintenance. Schedule: Weekly Maintenance Schedule.

If it happens on only one character
If your other characters log in but one doesn't, the problem is where that character stands. Blizzard's fix, in order:
- Move the stuck character with the self-service option (Character Stuck / character move).
- Still stuck? Reset your user interface (UI) and try again.
- If neither works, open a support ticket with the time of the error and the character name.

Will resetting the UI delete my character?
No. Blizzard's method renames the Cache, Interface and WTF folders instead of deleting files. Your interface layout and addon settings reset; your character, items and progress stay on the server.
